The first workshop of the PPID was held on December 04th & 05th, 2004, entitled ‘Democracy and Pluralism’ in the auditorium of the Public Library in Jaffna. Around fifteen youths (a majority of them females) attended and actively participated in the workshop on both days. Resource persons from Colombo and Peradeniya Universities and the civil society conducted the workshop. This workshop was sponsored by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung of Germany. The following topics were covered in Tamil by respective resource persons:

  1. Democratic Concepts and Principles – Dr. Selvy Thiruchandran, Executive Director, Women’s Education and Research Centre, Colombo.

  2. Constitution of Sri Lanka – Mr. M. Sutharshan, Lecturer, Department of Law, University of Jaffna.

  3. Rule of Law and Role of the Judiciary in a Democracy – Mr.M.Sutharshan

  4. Political Institutions in Sri Lanka (Parliament, Government, Opposition & Process of Legislation) – Dr.S.I.Keethaponcalan, Senior Lecturer, Department and Politics and Public Policy, University of Colombo

  5. Role and Responsibilities of Political Parties in a Democracy – Dr.S.I.Keethaponcalan

  6. Electoral Systems – Prof.A.Sivarajah, Professor of Political Science, Department of Political Science, University of Peradeniya.

  7. Federal Systems and Self Government – Prof.A.Sivarajah

  8. Political Participation (Elections, Political Parties, Lobby Groups, Civil Society) – Dr. Selvy Thiruchandran & Prof.A.Sivarajah

  9. Economic Systems (Market & Non-Market Economy) – Mr.N.Balakrishnan, Former Professor of Economics, University of Jaffna.

  10. Globalisation and Role of International Financial Institutions – Mr.N.Balakrishnan
